Week #63 LOCAL WX REPORT; CACHE MAP TILES

GE, Operators.

Welcome to Week #63.

Last week you received SPOTREPs and generated a map of the Sender’s locations. If you played around with the different map types, you probably noticed that the “Simple Map for no internet” is very crude… crude to the point of being barely useful. So, what can you do if you find yourself working with a Served Agency and the internet is down? If you have a little time in advance, there may be a solution. More on that in a minute.

This week we’re going to use a different map-generating form: a Local Weather Report.

There is a list of Net Operators below. I have sent a report to everyone on the list. Please send your Local Weather Report to the three (3) Operators that follow your callsign on the list. (If your call is at the bottom, go back to the top for the operators you’ll send to)
Open any reports that you receive and generate an ARCGIS Topo map of their sender’s locations. Zoom out if you need to, in order to see them all.
Now, zoom into your location. Zoom in pretty close, so you can see street names. Then Zoom back out and close the map. Turn off your internet connection and reopen the ARCGIS Topo map. You should be able to zoom back into your position, even without an internet connection. The reason is that your computer caches the map tiles that you zoom into when the internet is available and saves them temporarily.

The idea is (if you have a little warning in advance) you can zoom into your local area as needed. If you hold that zoom level and move side to side and up and down, you will save the entire area at that level of magnification. Mess around with it. See what you can do.
Who needs that Simple Map?

If you don’t get a weather report from me, send an email to: NJ2N at arrl dot net.

Please send a Winlink Check-in Form to SNJNWS and let me know which three operators you sent your report to.

Have fun!
